Beswick Urban Growers

Beswick Urban Growers community garden (BUG) is a community project dedicated to growing organic food, and sharing that knowledge with the people of East Manchester.

Located on the playing fields of the East Manchester Academy behind Beswick Library, BUG is a partnership between the school and wearemud.org

Since May 2023, BUG’s dedicated community gardener, local volunteers and school students have been transforming what was an overgrown bike track into half an acre of organic growing space.

BUG also has a large pagoda with seating, and is surrounded by green space and woodland, newly planted hedges, wildlife ponds, wildflower meadows and a newly-planted orchard.

The garden has an 18 metre polytunnel which can be both a venue for events and to grow food like tomatoes, peppers and grapes. Inside are four large raised beds designed to be used by people with limited mobility.

BUG is a place to connect and learn. A place to share ideas, stories and a meal together. If you’d like to come out into the fresh air, learn about growing your own food, and help this unique project flourish, 2024 is the perfect time to get involved.
